Let's discover causes, characteristics and prevention together
Skin spots are one of the most common aesthetic problems, and they can stem from many factors: sun exposure, ageing, hormonal changes, skin trauma, the intake or topical use of photosensitising or phototoxic drugs.
Let's discover together the main types of skin spots, their causes and how to take care of the skin, keeping it as even and radiant as possible.
1. Melasma or Chloasma
Causes and characteristics:melasma, also known as the "mask of pregnancy", is a form of hyperpigmentation caused mainly by hormonal changes. It often affects women during pregnancy, but it can also appear with the use of oral contraceptives or with hormonal changes linked to menopause. It appears as brown or greyish patches, mainly on the face, cheekbones, forehead and upper lip.
Prevention and care:excessive sun exposure during pregnancy is often the trigger for this type of skin spot. Protecting the skin from UV rays is therefore essential to reduce the intensity of the spots.
2. Ephelides
Causes and characteristics:Ephelides, also known as "freckles", are small light-brown spots that commonly appear on people with fair or red-toned skin. Unlike other types of spots, they are mainly hereditary and become more visible with sun exposure. They are generally not considered harmful and tend to fade or lighten during the winter months.
Prevention and care:for those who want to keep them under control, daily sun protection remains the main strategy.
3. Solar and Actinic Lentigines
Causes and characteristics:Solar lentigines, also known as actinic lentigines, are brown spots that appear after prolonged exposure to UV rays, mainly on sun-exposed areas such as the face, hands, arms and décolleté. They are more common in people over 40 and in those who have had long sun exposure without adequate protection.
Prevention and care:prevention starts with daily sun protection, to avoid the pigmentation getting worse.
4. Senile Lentigines
Causes and characteristics:Senile lentigines are similar to solar lentigines, but they are due to the natural ageing of the skin and to repeated sun exposure accumulated over the years. They appear as brown, roundish, flat spots, usually located on the face, hands and arms. They are among the first signs of skin ageing and, although harmless, can be aesthetically bothersome.
Prevention and care:here too, sun protection is the first ally in preventing senile lentigines from getting worse.
5. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
Causes and characteristics:Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation consists of spots that form after inflammatory processes of the skin, such as acne, lesions, aggressive cosmetic treatments or infections. They appear as dark areas of varying intensity and occur when the skin reacts by producing excess melanin in response to the inflammation.
Prevention and care:Preventing these spots is linked to the prompt, correct treatment of the conditions that cause them, such as acne. To lighten them, products based on glycolic acid and niacinamide can be used.
