Glycolic acid in skincare
Glycolic acid is one of the most loved ingredients in the world of skincare, known for its ability to renew the skin, make it brighter and soften the signs of ageing. Derived from sugar cane, this acid belongs to the family of alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) and is a powerful chemical exfoliant that works deep within the skin. Let's find out what it is and how it can transform the appearance of our skin.
What is Glycolic Acid?
Glycolic acid is a molecule with an exfoliating action, characterised by a simple, small structure that allows it to quickly penetrate the deeper layers of the skin. Compared with other alpha hydroxy acids, such as lactic acid or mandelic acid, glycolic acid is considered the most effective precisely because of its penetration capacity. However, because of its potency, it is important to use it carefully, especially on sensitive skin.
How does it work on the skin?
The main advantage of glycolic acid is its exfoliating action. This ingredient dissolves the bonds between dead cells on the surface of the skin, making it easier for them to detach and for the skin to renew itself. Let's look at the main benefits in detail:
1. Deep exfoliation
Thanks to its small molecular structure, glycolic acid penetrates quickly and acts on the surface of the skin, removing dead cells. This process helps smooth the skin's texture, making it smoother and more even.
2. Bright, renewed skin
Regular exfoliation with glycolic acid stimulates cell turnover, the process by which skin cells renew themselves. With consistent use, the skin looks brighter and fresher, as new, young cells emerge on the surface.
3. Reduction of dark spots and hyperpigmentation
Thanks to its ability to remove the surface layers of the skin, glycolic acid is very effective in the treatment of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. By lightening the skin, this acid helps soften discolouration, sun spots and post-acne scars.
4. Anti-ageing action
Glycolic acid stimulates collagen production, a fundamental protein that gives the skin elasticity and tone. With age, collagen production decreases, encouraging the formation of wrinkles and loss of firmness. Regular use of glycolic acid can reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve skin elasticity.
How to use glycolic acid safely
Glycolic acid, when used correctly, can offer numerous benefits. However, it is important to follow a few precautions to avoid irritation and other side effects.
1. Start gradually
It is advisable to start with a low concentration (between 5% and 10%), as in the formulation of our B-SELFIE Alkemic, and observe how the skin reacts. Once the skin has adjusted, the frequency of use can be increased.
2. Use in the evening and protect yourself from the sun
Because glycolic acid makes the skin more sensitive to UV rays, it is important to use it in the evening. During the day, on the other hand, it is essential to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the skin from sun damage.
3. Hydration and post-treatment care
After applying glycolic acid, the skin may feel dry or tight. It is advisable to use a rich moisturiser to maintain the skin's balance and help it regenerate.
Glycolic acid is a true ally for those who want brighter, more even, younger-looking skin. With the right frequency of use and adequate sun protection, this ingredient can transform the appearance of the skin.
